  1. When

From the recording Scratches and Dust

Lyrics

When will we stop dumping trash into the ocean?
When will we stop pumping poisons in the air?
When will we start to show the love and the devotion
To every living thing that’s on this planet that we share?

When will the meek inherit what was promised?
Will the weak not be threatened by the strong?
When will the Muslim and the Jew, the Catholic and the Protestant
Get over it and learn to get along?

With all the time that’s passed since we began to learn the lessons of the wise
You’d think that we’d be past all of the hate, all of the greed, and all the lies

So tell me when, when’s it gonna happen?
When?  What year and month and day?
Now can you say (hey) will this madness ever end
And when’s it gonna happen tell me when?

One God, one Earth, tell me what one life is worth
How can you measure families torn apart?
Two ears, two eyes, can’t you see and hear the cries?
When will everybody have a heart?

When will we end all the poverty and hunger?
Will we end injustice and disease?
When will we blend the passion of the younger
With compassion and the wisdom that an older person sees?

When will we start to treat the Earth like she’s our mother?
Will we stop taking everything too far?
When will we start being kind to one another
Like the sisters and the brothers that we are?

With all the time that’s passed
Since we began to learn the lessons of the people who were wise
You’d think that we’d be past all of the hate, all of the greed, and all the lies

So tell me when, when’s it gonna happen?
When?  What year and month and day?
Now can you say (hey) will this madness ever end
And when’s it gonna happen tell me when?
