From the recording RECKONING
Lyrics
The airport train pulled into Central Station
The crowds on Damrak took us by surprise
We walked down busy sidewalks past the palace in the square
And the magic of the city filled our eyes
The trees that lined the old canals stood silent
As a symphony of bicycle bells chimed
The Amstel flowed into the town… and flowed between our lips
And every precious sip of gold tasted so fine
On the streets of Amsterdam…caught in the rain
Bicycles and streetcars passing by
We didn’t know which way to go, didn’t have a plan
It was just you and me on the streets of Amsterdam
At night the streetlights rippled on the water
All the neon signs were lit… and so was I
Coffee shops on every block would beckon us inside
To come and take a magic carpet ride
The Oude Kirk looked down on narrow alleys
Where passers-by were bathed in soft red light
Pretty women danced and smiled as patrons window-shopped
For that very special lady of the night
On the streets of Amsterdam…caught in the rain
Bicycles and streetcars passing by
We didn’t know which way to go, didn’t have a plan
It was just you and me on the streets of Amsterdam
The days they seemed so timeless… the nights they felt so free
With the scent of fresh cut flowers in the air
I remember how you took my hand and what you said to me
As we walked the cobblestones of old Dam Square
Funny how so long ago can seem like yesterday
It’s so strange the way that time just melts away
Now on the streets of Amsterdam I whisper your name
As bicycles and streetcars pass me by
No matter where the time may go, no matter where I am
I’ll remember you, the rain, and how we’d stand
Together on the streets of Amsterdam
